The Swing

Have you ever been in the zone? Even if you can’t remember it you have, I guarantee it. Being in the zone is when you experience expansive vision, effortless focus, a feeling of timelessness, freedom of doubt and absolute confidence.

I have been playing golf since I was five years old. In the twenty years since then I have learned the one truth of the golf swing:

Everyone has a perfect and unique swing, but it does not belong to us.

It is a hard concept to accept, the knowledge that our greatest game is nothing more than a fleeting breath in the wind, but to understand it is the key to mastery.

We can practice the swing, tweak shaft angle or grip strength, but to hit that perfect shot, we must let go of all this useless clutter and seek out the place, the zone if you will, where your swing finds you.

A perfectly struck golf ball is the purest expression of the golf swing. There can be no aggression in this; it is not fueled by rage or emotion, almost cold blooded in a sense. It is precise and it is deadly, and to perform requires peace of mind.

There is energy all around us. That energy is both yin and yang, positive and negative. Only a select few are capable of separating this energy. Doing this creates an imbalance, and the universe wants to restore its balance, and in the moment the positive and negative energy come crashing back together, you provide release and guidance creating the perfect golf shot.

You do not control it; you are its humble guide.

There is nothing that makes up a golf swing. Your swing is built through your uniqueness and the sum of all input, both good and bad. Regardless of the origins of your swing, being in the zone, when you find that place of expansive vision, effortless focus, a feeling of timelessness, freedom of doubt and absolute confidence.

It is not a place that you can force yourself to; it’s a place that you have to seek out with your soul. That is where your swing is. Go find it.
